Nyajuru, the daughter of an unconventional single mother from a traditional Congolese village, was not raised to respect the rules.
She married her high school sweetheart, Mutware, unaware that his tolerance for her independent thinking and feminist beliefs had its limits. War breaks out, forcing Nyajuru and Mutware to flee to a nearby city where Nyajuru connects with her late mother’s best friend. Here she realizes the power in her mother’s legacy and forges a friendship with Bahati, a like-minded young woman with a thriving business in the bustling hub of Uvira.
As Nyajuru continues to nurture her ambitions for a career, it soon becomes clear that she can’t follow her heart while clinging to the idea of a traditional life.
